Recreation in South Austin Schools
By day, residents can enjoy hanging out on South Congress shopping, cooling off in one of the many swimming holes around, or eating at any of the delicious restaurants and food trailers. The vibe in South Austin is hip and relaxed. Traditionally, South Austin is known for its counterculture movement, although these days it’s become more gentrified. While there really isn’t any place in South Austin that requires a suit and tie, the friendly and welcoming ambiance makes this part of the city very appealing.
South Austin is also known for its abundance of outdoor recreational activities. A lush green belt runs through much of the city, with several access points in the south. Some of the best access points to the Barton Creek Greenbelt are the Zilker Park access, the Gus Fruh access (at 2642 Barton Hills Drive), and the Twin Falls access (located right off or Mopac). When it rains, these spots fill with water and are a great place to hang out with your friends, kids, or dog. Many of these places require a little hike to get to the water, but it’s well worth it.
If you aren’t up for a hike, Barton Springs Pool is easily accessible and boasts lush green grass and shady trees to sit under. The pool is a little chilly at a constant 68 degrees, but it feels wonderful on a hot summer day. There is a diving board and shallow end in this natural pool, and it’s truly an Austin staple. Other pools include Deep Eddy and Big Stacy Pool, which are also spring fed and a fantastic place to take kids (although no pets are allowed, unfortunately). All three are wonderful places to tan, swim laps, or socialize.
In the cooler months, it’s fun to hang out in non-water related spots like Zilker Park, Butler Park, and the many dog parks located throughout town!
Here are some specific reccomendations:
Lake/river access: Beat the Texas heat by spending your day at one of Austin's beautiful water access spots: Barton Springs, Lady Bird Lake, Deep Eddy Pool, McKinney Falls, Barton Creek Greenbelt Preserve, and several other access points along the Colorado River.
Dog Parks: There are plenty of places for your furry friends to run around at Auditorium Shores, the Greenbelt Preserve, Town Lake, Zilker Dog Park, and “Barking” Springs (located across the fence from Barton Springs). For a full list of dog park locations, click here.
Disc Golf Courses: Disc golf is a popular sport played by Austinites, you can find courses at Circle C Ranch Metropolitan Park on Slaughter Creek, Mary Moor Searight Park, Zilker Park, and the Met Center Disc Golf Course.
South Congress Dining: South Congress has some great places to eat such as the Magnolia Café (best brunch in South Austin), South Congress Café (southern gourmet food), and the famous Home Slice Pizza.
South Lamar Area Dining: The southern side of Lamar also has some delicious choices such as Matt’s El Rancho ("The King of Mexican Food"), Uchi (best sushi in Austin), and Torchy's Tacos (a local favorite).
Barton Springs Road Dining: Along the west side of Barton Springs Road you can find local favorites such as Chuy’s (Tex-Mex), El Alma Mexican, and Shady Grove Cafe (burgers/southern food, great outdoor patio).
Grab a drink: South Austin has many laid-back places to grab a drink with friends. Crow Bar on South Congress is a popular choice for an outdoor patio. At the historic Continental Club, you can find live music every night of the week in a dive bar atmosphere. If you’re looking for something different, Square Rut Kava bar specializes in a Hawaiian drink called Kava that promotes relaxation and a cheerful mood without the use of alcohol.
